I am looking to find other plein air painters and groups who are interested in meeting up to paint this year in Northern Italy. I am looking for painters in the Lucca, Verona, Lake Garda, and San Marino areas. If you know of any like minded artists I would appreciate hearing about them. There really aren't plein air clubs or groups in Italy like there are in the States, at least none that I'm aware of; there are lots of places (anglophone) where you can take classes....Emulatiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11773405982717176805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5537063209807155877.post-19332817216747498462016-02-06T22:32:32.645-05:002016-02-06T22:32:32.645-05:00Hi! Great way to start the new year.

I would also add that one desirable side product of painting what one sees is that others are inspired to SEE as well. I've just returned from a painting trip to Florence, and I agree with you, it's tricky getting those watercolours to reach an oil like saturation and still keep the light, I think you do a good job of that!
Have a great day!Steve PPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02985228895081571087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5537063209807155877.post-42831346387704486662012-05-22T08:03:09.341-04:002012-05-22T08:03:09.341-04:00I'm a big advocate of painting within the two ...I'm a big advocate of painting within the two hour window, and not returning to the same scene (even though the light can be fairly consistent in Italy from one day to the next). I guess for me its partly the challenge, and partly the spontaneity--and the notion that the plein air work is meant to be a sketch, an elaborate "field note," and not a "finished" landscape.Emulatiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11773405982717176805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5537063209807155877.post-76781584506619950942012-05-22T07:01:17.646-04:002012-05-22T07:01:17.646-04:00About technique ...I paint a ground of undertones....About technique ...I paint a ground of undertones...say umber or Sienna...on a several panels and let them thoroughly dry. Your speed at rendering all in it amazes me. Of course I have much yet to practice besides the speed in plein air.

It is not a fault, so don't apologize. I suppose the learning aspect is where I come from. No one wants to come home with an inferior painting. It may be a flaw of mine, but I didn't show my two failed attempts because I wiped them out on site before packing up--I couldn't bear to truck back home with two boards which for me, at that point, were only valuable as supports for my next paintings. I prefer to work on a toned ground, usually some version of reddish/ochre/burnt sienna,Emulatiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11773405982717176805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5537063209807155877.post-18737207666897485952011-09-24T14:06:19.395-04:002011-09-24T14:06:19.395-04:00As a beginner Plein Air painter but not new to art...As a beginner Plein Air painter but not new to art, I would have loved to have seen what you call your unsuccessful paintings. I imagine not wanting the images out here on the web has it's merits but it limits us newbies and the experience of learning.
